What is an AI ring?
“AI ring” covers three quite different things: a ring that reads your sleep, a ring that takes your voice notes, and a ring you can ask a question and get an answer from. It helps to know which one you are looking at before you buy, because they differ in almost everything that matters day to day.
In short. Health rings measure your sleep and heart rate and let an app’s AI explain the trends. Voice rings capture what you say and turn it into notes or a question for an AI, usually through your phone. Assistant rings close the loop on your finger: you ask, they answer, and they can act for you. The things to check are the same for all three: whether it needs your phone, when the microphone is on, what a charge really lasts, and what the plan pays for.
Three kinds of AI ring
- Health ringsSensors on the inside of the band measure heart rate, temperature and movement; AI in the app turns that into sleep and recovery insights. Oura, Samsung Galaxy Ring and RingConn are examples.
- Voice ringsA microphone and a button capture what you say and send it to an app on your phone, which turns it into notes or passes it to an AI. Pebble Index 01, Sandbar Stream, Vocci Ring and Spark Ring are examples.
- Assistant ringsThe ring itself closes the loop: you ask, it answers and acts. That needs a way to reach the AI, a way to give the answer and a way to say yes. Lychnos Ring, in development, is one.
The lines blur: Natura Interface reaches the AI agents you choose through your phone and tracks health too. Ring by ring, with sources: AI rings, compared.
From button to answer
- You press and speak. On a hold-to-talk ring the microphone works only while you press, so nothing is heard in between: hold to talk versus wake words.
- The sound leaves the ring. Over Bluetooth to your phone, or over the ring’s own mobile connection, such as an eSIM on LTE-M.
- Speech becomes text. A speech recognition model writes down what you said; a ring’s small microphone in a noisy street makes this one of the hardest steps: how speech recognition works and what we found testing it on a ring.
- A language model works out the answer. If you asked for something to be done, an agent prepares it and should ask before it sends, moves, pays or deletes anything: what an AI agent is and AI that asks first.
- The answer comes back. As text in an app, a voice at your ear (how text-to-speech works), a line on a small screen (a ring with a screen) or a buzz you learn to read (haptic feedback).
Most of this runs in a data centre today, because language models are large; smaller parts can run on the ring or the phone: edge AI and cloud AI.
How they connect
Almost every ring pairs with your phone over Bluetooth Low Energy, which costs little battery but means the phone must be near. An assistant ring that should work on its own needs its own mobile connection: Lychnos Ring uses an eSIM on LTE-M, a mobile network made for small devices. A ring with its own connection also needs someone to pay for the network and the AI behind it, which is why such rings come with a plan: what a plan pays for.
Battery: the hard part
A ring holds a battery the size of a fingernail. Health rings, which mostly measure quietly, are rated at around a week. A ring that records, sends speech over a radio and lights a screen spends far more for each minute it is used, so its days depend on how much you talk to it. Pebble’s Index 01 takes another path and is not charged at all. How long smart ring batteries last.
Privacy and the law
- When is the microphone on? A ring that listens only while you press is a different thing from one that records the room, and in some European countries recording others without consent is an offence: recording conversations with AI wearables.
- Where does your voice go, and is it kept? Under the GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data and for its deletion: your data rights with AI assistants.
- Does it say it is an AI? Europe’s AI Act requires it: the AI Act and assistants.
- Can you buy it in Europe at all? Many AI wearables ship only to the US: AI wearables in Europe.
Who it suits
An AI ring is good at quick things with your hands full or your phone away: a question, a reminder said the moment you think of it, a message read to you. It is poor at anything long, visual or typed. Whether that is worth it depends on your day: is an AI ring worth it?, for parents, at work, reminders that reach you and talking to AI in public.
What to check before you buy
- Does it need your phone? If yes, it is a remote for the phone, which is fine if that is what you want.
- Where do answers come back? In an app, through earbuds, or on the ring’s own screen and speaker.
- What does the plan cost, and what works without it?
- When is the microphone on, and is your voice kept?
- How long does a charge last, measured, not promised?
- Does it fit, and can it get wet? Sizing a smart ring and what water ratings mean.
- Will it keep working if the company changes course? Open firmware and a choice of AI provider help.
Which kind Lychnos Ring is
It is an assistant ring: hold to talk, read the first line on a see-through screen, hear the rest at your ear, press once to agree. Health tracking comes with its second model. Questions
Do AI rings need a phone?
Most do: they pair with an app over Bluetooth, and the phone does the heavy work. A few, such as Lychnos Ring, are designed with their own mobile connection so they can work without the phone after set-up.
Are AI rings always listening?
Not all of them. Lychnos Ring and Sandbar Stream switch the microphone on only while you press; check this for any ring you consider.
Can an AI ring replace my phone?
Not for most people: you cannot browse, watch videos or type long messages on a ring. An assistant ring can take over the quick things, such as a question, a reminder or a message read to you, so the phone can stay in your bag more often.
How long does an AI ring’s battery last?
It depends on the kind. Health rings are rated at around a week; Oura says 6 to 9 days for its Ring 5. A ring with its own mobile radio spends more: our target for Lychnos Ring is 4 to 7 days, still to be measured.
