Smart ring battery life: how long they last, and why.
A ring has room for one very small battery, so every feature is paid for in days.
In short. Health rings, which mostly measure quietly, are rated at around a week: Oura says six to nine days for its Ring 5. A ring that reaches the internet on its own spends more on its radio, so expect fewer days: our target for Lychnos Ring is 4 to 7 days, still to be measured. Pebble’s Index 01 takes a third path: it is not charged at all.
What the makers say
| Ring | Kind | Battery, as the maker states it |
|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 5 | Health ring | Six to nine days, depending on usage and ring size; an optional charging case holds about a month of backup power |
| Pebble Index 01 | Voice-note ring | Not rechargeable: roughly 12 to 15 hours of recording, up to two years at 10 to 20 short notes a day; then you send it back to be recycled |
| Lychnos Ring | AI ring you talk to, with its own eSIM (in development) | Target 4 to 7 days per charge; to be measured |

These are the makers’ figures, not our measurements; real battery life depends on how you use a ring. Lychnos Ring’s figure is a design target. What drains a ring
- The radio. A short Bluetooth link to a phone costs little. A mobile connection of its own costs more each time it wakes up to send or receive, which is why a ring that works without a phone needs care with every message.
- Sensors that run all day. Health rings sample heart rate, temperature and movement around the clock; the more often they sample, the more they use.
- Light, sound and screen. A speaker, a vibration motor, a light and a screen each take a share when they are on.
- Size. A smaller ring holds a smaller battery; that is one reason makers give a range.
- Age. Every rechargeable battery holds a little less each year, faster when kept hot and full.
Why a ring you talk to is different
A health ring can collect quietly and send its data to your phone when it is near. A ring you talk to has to hear you, send your words over its own connection, wait for the answer and play it at your ear. That is why the first Lychnos Ring keeps its whole battery for conversation and leaves health sensors to a later model (why we chose that order), and why its microphone has power only while you hold the button. How to get more days from any ring
- Turn off what you do not use: extra notifications, measurements you do not read.
- Top up little and often, for example while you shower or at your desk, instead of running it empty.
- Keep it out of the heat: a sunny dashboard or a sauna ages a battery: why batteries wear out.
- Update the firmware: makers sometimes improve battery life after launch.

Questions
How long does a smart ring battery last?
Health rings are rated at around a week: Oura, for example, says six to nine days for the Oura Ring 5, depending on usage and ring size. Rings that reach the internet on their own last less; our target for Lychnos Ring is 4 to 7 days, still to be measured. Some voice-note rings are not charged at all.
Can you replace a smart ring's battery?
Usually not: the battery is sealed inside the ring. Pebble's Index 01 is not recharged either; you send it back to be recycled when its battery is used up.
