Is an AI ring worth it?
It depends on what you want it to take over. For some people the answer is no, and we say so about our own ring too.
In short. An AI ring is worth it if you want the small, frequent things without taking out your phone: the time and your next meeting, an important email, a quick answer, a reminder at the right moment. It is not worth it if what you want is health tracking, long reading, maps or photos. A phone, a watch or a health ring does those better.
What an AI ring does well
The phone is good at everything, and that is the trouble: you take it out to check one thing and look up twenty minutes later. A ring you talk to handles the few things you reach for all day, and has nothing to scroll.
- Quick questions. The weather at five, a word you forgot, how long to boil an egg.
- Reminders at the right moment. One buzz when it matters, wherever you are.
- The email that matters. “Tell me when Anna writes”, and the rest waits.
- Small tasks that need a yes. “Move my three o’clock to four”: it finds the time and asks before it changes anything.
- A claim you doubt. Repeat it, and feel the answer: true, false or not sure.
More examples in what people would use it for.
What it does not do
- Long reading. A ring’s screen shows a line, not a page. Lychnos Ring shows the first line of an answer on its 72 × 40 see-through screen and says the rest at your ear.
- Maps, photos and apps. Those still need a screen you can hold.
- Health tracking, on our first ring. The first Lychnos Ring spends its whole battery on conversation; sleep and heart rate are planned for a later model. Why we chose that order.
- Phone calls, on our first ring. Its eSIM carries data, not calls, and it has no phone number.
Two kinds of AI ring
Most rings sold as AI rings today are recording rings: you press, speak, and a voice note goes to an app on your phone, which turns it into text or passes it to an AI. They are simple and often cheap, but the phone does the work and gives the answers. Assistant rings answer you on the ring itself. That needs a connection without the phone, a way to show or say the answer, and a way to say yes. Lychnos Ring is built around those three. The comparison of AI rings shows which is which, with sources.
What it costs
| Lychnos Ring (expected prices, VAT included) | Amount |
|---|---|
| The ring | €299, once |
| The Lychnos plan, founding price for the first buyers | €9.99 a month for the first 12 months |
| The plan after that | Expected at €14.99 to €19.99 a month |
| To reserve one | Not yet: join the free list to hear when pre-orders open |
The plan pays for the ring’s own mobile data and for Lychnos in our cloud; that is what lets it work without your phone. Why rings like this need a plan, and what to ask about any ring’s plan: why an AI ring needs a plan. We confirm the final price and the delivery window before we ask for the rest.
Who should skip it
- If you want sleep and health data, a health ring does that today. Ours does not, yet.
- If you read a lot on the go, keep the phone or an e-reader.
- If you need calls on your wrist, a smartwatch with its own mobile connection takes them.
- If you want it now: Lychnos Ring is in development and has no delivery date yet.
- If you live outside Europe: pre-orders are planned in the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and the United States, where the ring would ship only once the FCC has authorized it.
Who it suits
People who take out the phone “for a second” and lose the next twenty minutes. People whose hands are busy: cooking, carrying a child, walking the dog, sitting in a meeting where a phone on the table says the wrong thing. See an AI ring for work and for parents.
Five questions to ask any AI ring
- Does it need the phone nearby? Then it is the phone’s remote control.
- Where does the answer arrive? On the ring, in your earbuds, or in an app.
- What does the plan cost, and what works without it?
- When does the microphone listen? All the time, or only while you press.
- What if the company changes course? Open firmware helps: Lychnos Ring’s firmware, app and protocol are planned under Apache-2.0.
Questions
Is an AI ring better than a smartwatch?
Not better; different. A watch has a bigger screen, apps and often health sensors. A ring is smaller and quieter, and easy to forget you are wearing. It suits quick questions and small tasks more than reading.
How much does an AI ring cost?
Simple rings that record voice notes for a phone app start under 100 US dollars; rings that answer you cost more, and many need a monthly plan. Lychnos Ring is expected at €299, with its plan at €9.99 a month for the first buyers in the first 12 months, then expected at €14.99 to €19.99.
Can I try Lychnos Ring before I buy?
Not yet: it is in development. Pre-orders are not open yet; we confirm the final price and the delivery window before anyone pays.
