Guide
Silence your phone, but let family through.
The phone goes on silent for a meeting, a film or the night, and the one call that mattered goes to voicemail with everything else. Both iPhone and Android can let a few people through. You only have to tell them who.
On an iPhone
Apple calls its quiet modes Focus, and Do Not Disturb is one of them. These steps follow Apple’s guide for iOS 27.
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Choose a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep.
- Tap People, then Allow Notifications From, and add the people who should get through.
- If you like, turn on Allow Repeated Calls, so that a second call from the same person within three minutes rings through.
For one or two people who must reach you whatever the phone is set to, there is a stronger switch. Open Contacts, choose the person, tap Edit, then Ringtone or Text Tone, and turn on Emergency Bypass. Their calls then sound even when the iPhone is silenced. Apple also lets calls from the emergency contacts in your Medical ID come through.
On Android
Recent versions of Android keep these settings under Modes, and phone makers change the menus, so the names on yours may differ a little. These steps follow Google’s Android help.
- Open Settings, tap Modes, then Do Not Disturb.
- Under Notification filters, tap People and choose who may call or message you.
- Turn on Allow repeat callers, so that a person who calls twice within 15 minutes gets through.
On older versions, look under Sound & vibration, then Do Not Disturb.
Test it before you rely on it
Turn the mode on, then ask someone on your list to call you, and someone who is not. Send a message as well: on Android, calls and messages have separate settings. Two minutes now is better than finding out on the evening it matters.
Who to let through
Keep the list short. Every name makes the quiet a little leakier, and a list of twenty is no filter at all. A reasonable start is whoever looks after your children, the school, a partner and a parent who lives alone. Add the calendar or a reminders app if you depend on them, and leave the rest to wait.
The same idea on a ring
We are building Lychnos Ring around the same rule: it is designed to buzz on your finger only for the people and reminders you chose, so the phone can stay in a bag on silent. It is in development; why fewer interruptions matter is in notifications and focus.

Questions
What does “repeated calls” mean?
A setting that lets a second call through when the same person rings again soon after, on the idea that it may be urgent. On iPhone it covers two or more calls from the same person within three minutes; on Android, two calls within 15 minutes.
Can one contact ring even when my iPhone is on silent?
Yes. In Contacts, edit the person, tap Ringtone or Text Tone and turn on Emergency Bypass. Their calls or messages then sound and vibrate even when the iPhone or its notifications are silenced.
