Guide
How to check and limit your screen time.
Ask people how long they spend on their phone and most will give you a number. It is rarely the right one: when researchers compared what people reported with what their devices logged, the two matched only moderately. Your phone keeps the real count, and both iPhone and Android will show it to you.
On an iPhone: Screen Time
These steps follow Apple’s guide for iOS 27.
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Manage Screen Time, then Turn On App & Website Activity.
- To see the count, tap Daily Average, then Week or Day. Scroll down for Pickups and Notifications: how often you picked the phone up, and how many notifications arrived.
- To set limits, use Time Allowances for categories such as games or social media, and a Screen Time Schedule for the hours when only the apps you allow are available.
If you use an iPad or a Mac with the same Apple Account, Share Across Devices puts them in one report and applies the same limits.
On Android: Digital Wellbeing
These steps follow Google’s Android help; menus differ a little between phone makers.
- Open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing. The first screen shows how long you used each app and how often you unlocked the phone.
- For a daily limit, tap App timers, then Set timer next to an app. When the time is up, the app closes and its icon dims until midnight.
- Focus mode pauses the apps you choose, on demand or on a schedule; Bedtime mode can turn the screen grey and keep it dark at night.
What to look at first
- Pickups, not only hours. Short checks add up, and each one pulls you out of what you were doing. The checking habit has been studied: why you keep checking your phone.
- Notifications. If the number is in the hundreds, the cheapest fix is fewer of them, not more willpower: what one buzz costs.
- One limit at a time. Start with the app you open without meaning to. One limit you keep does more than ten you switch off.
- Make it less inviting. In a small trial, a grey screen cut daily use: a grayscale phone.
Fewer reasons to pick it up
Many pickups are for something small: the time, the next meeting, whether a message came. Lychnos Ring is being built to answer those on your finger, so there is one reason less to unlock the phone. It is in development and makes no health claims. What a daily number adds up to over a year: the screen time calculator.
Whether your number is too high is a different question, and the research answers it differently than you might expect: how much screen time is too much for adults?

Questions
How do I see how often I pick up my phone?
On an iPhone, open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Daily Average, and scroll to Pickups. On Android, open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing, which shows how often you unlock the phone and how long you use each app.
What happens when an app timer runs out on Android?
According to Google, the app closes and its icon dims, and the timers reset at midnight. To use the app again before then, you delete the timer.
